A Salmon Of 5lbs Taken By Mike Sturgeon From Lower Duart |
At last the rain came, after one of the driest summer
seasons on recent record. The lack of water affected the migratory fish runs
and also the trout fishing, terrestrial insect hatches were down as a result
of the dry and crusty ground and the lochs were too warm and did not seem to
cool down until the rain came at end of the month. However despite this the
fish numbers held up reasonably well and fishers prepared to have a go were
by and large rewarded.
Brown Trout entered into the Scourie Hotel Fishing Log were 862 the best being 3.25lb to Colin Findlay and a 19" fish estimated by me to be 3.5lb to Jon Beer very ably netted by Nick Hancock. Seatrout/Finnock caught and returned were 54 the best of the bunch 3.5lb to Paul Kirby and 3.5lb to Kit Read. Salmon caught totalled 18; 1 @ 3lb to Tim Bridge 1 @ 9lb to Bob Jeavons 10 between 3lb and 10lb to the Franklin party 1 @ 5lb to John Seviour 1 @ 6.5lb to Jenny Cooper 1 @ 2.5lb to Jane Vincent 1 @ 14lb to the Wellard/Cooper party 1 @ 2.5lb to Bob Jeavons Most of these fish were returned as either Hen fish or coloured. The rain when it came, came with a north wind which put a dusting of snow on the tops and chilled the lochs down with a vengeance and of course, being the West coast of Scotland, the rain forgot to stop for about 4 days so we had too much water! Who said fishing was easy? All the best for the rest of the year. Best wishes Patrick
